Maharashtra State Police jurisdiction was divided into 25 Districts and 4 Ranges in the year 1956 for effective policing in the State.

Later in 1973 Government increased the number of Ranges from 4 to 6 vide Govt. of Maharashtra, Home Department, Resolution No.APO/2672/2_V_A dated 26th April 1973 wherein Amravati Range came into existence on May 1st 1973 and Amravati Range started functioning having control over 4 districts namely Amravati (Rural), Akola, Buldana and Yavatmal. The first Deputy Inspector General of Police who headed Amravati Range was Shri W.K.Patil, IPS. Since then till 1998 Amravati Range was always headed by an officer of the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police.

In the year 1998, Akola district was bifurcated into 2 districts (1) Akola and (2) Washim. In addition Amravati Commissionerate was created caving out City Area from the district Amravati, at the same time the post of Range DIG was upgraded as Special Inspector General of Police, Amravati Range, Amravati vide Govt. of Maharashtra, Home Department, G.R.No.IPS 1798/Pra.kra. 229/Pol-1 dated 31st July 1998.

Since then Amravati Range police is headed by Spl. Inspector General of Police having control over 5 districts namely, Amravati (Rural), Akola, Buldana, Yavatmal and Washim
